SEO Audit for Small Business: A DIY Guide
By BudgetByte Editorial Team • Published on 13/10/2026
An SEO audit is a structured check of why your website is, or is not, showing up on Google. For a small business, it does not need expensive software or a 90-page report. You need to know whether Google can find and index your pages, whether each page targets the right search, and whether local signals such as your Google Business Profile support your site. This guide walks you through a practical DIY SEO audit for small business websites, in the order that matters most.

What You Need Before You Start
- Google Search Console access for your site. It is free and shows how Google sees your pages. If you do not have it, set it up first.
- Google Business Profile access, if you serve local customers.
- A list of your main services and service areas.
- A spreadsheet to record issues and fixes.
Step 1: Check Your Pages Are Indexed
If Google has not indexed a page, it cannot rank.
- In Search Console, open Indexing → Pages. Look at the number of indexed and not indexed pages.
- Review the reasons pages are not indexed, such as "Crawled – currently not indexed", "Duplicate without user-selected canonical" or "Excluded by noindex tag".
- Use URL Inspection on your most important pages: home page, each service page and contact page.
- Search Google for
site:yourdomain.com.aufor a rough view of what is indexed.
Common problems: pages accidentally set to noindex, a staging site blocking search engines, or important pages not linked from anywhere.
Step 2: Technical Health Checks
- HTTPS: every page should load securely, and http versions should redirect to https.
- One version of the site: www and non-www should resolve to one version with a single redirect.
- Sitemap: submit an XML sitemap in Search Console and check it only lists pages you want indexed.
- Robots.txt: make sure it is not blocking important pages.
- Broken links and 404s: check Search Console for 404 errors and redirect old URLs to the best matching live page.
- Mobile: open your site on a phone. Text should be readable, buttons easy to tap and nothing should spill off the screen.
- Speed: test key pages with Google PageSpeed Insights. Large images and heavy scripts are the usual causes of slow pages.
Step 3: On-Page SEO for Each Key Page
Go through your home page and each service page:
- Title tag: unique, about 60 characters or fewer, with the main keyword near the start, and your location if you serve a local area. Example: "Emergency Plumber Brisbane | 24/7 Call-Outs".
- Meta description: a clear summary with a reason to click, around 150 characters.
- One H1 that matches the page's purpose.
- Headings (H2s) that cover what customers want to know: services, areas, pricing approach, process, FAQs.
- Content depth: does the page answer the questions a customer would ask before calling? Thin pages with a few lines rarely rank.
- Internal links: link related pages together, such as blog posts to service pages.
- Images: compressed, with descriptive alt text.
Watch out for keyword cannibalisation: two or more pages targeting the same search, which can split rankings. Merge or differentiate them.
Step 4: Local SEO Signals
For businesses serving local customers:
- Google Business Profile: correct primary category, service areas, hours, phone number, website link, services and real photos.
- NAP consistency: your business name, address (if shown) and phone number should match across your website, profile and directories.
- Reviews: a steady flow of genuine reviews, with replies. Ask every happy customer, and reply to every review.
- Service area pages: if you work across several suburbs, useful area pages can help. See service area pages for tradies.
- Schema markup: LocalBusiness and Service structured data help search engines understand your business.
Step 5: Content and Search Intent
Look at the Performance report in Search Console:
- Queries with impressions but few clicks: improve titles and descriptions to earn the click.
- Queries ranking in positions 8–30: these are near wins. Strengthen the page with more depth, FAQs and internal links.
- Missing topics: questions customers ask that no page answers. Plan blog posts or service page sections for them.
Step 6: Conversion Basics
Traffic is only useful if it turns into enquiries:
- Is your phone number clickable on mobile?
- Is there a clear call to action on every page?
- Does the contact or quote form work? Submit a test and confirm you receive it.
- Do pages show trust signals, such as licences, real photos and reviews?
Prioritising Fixes
Rank issues by impact and effort:
- Critical: pages not indexed, site-wide noindex, broken forms, major redirect problems.
- High: weak titles on key pages, thin service pages, missing Google Business Profile details.
- Medium: speed improvements, internal links, schema.
- Ongoing: new content, reviews and links.
When to Hire Help
A DIY audit finds the obvious problems. Get professional help when issues are technical (redirects, rendering, migrations), when rankings drop suddenly, or when you do not have time to fix what you find.
