Why Analytics Matters for a Small Business Website
Want tracking set up properly from launch? We install GA4, configure enquiry tracking and connect Search Console on every site we build. Talk to us.
Most small business owners want to know one thing from their website: is it bringing in work? Google Analytics 4 (GA4) can answer that question, but only if it's set up to track the actions that matter, such as quote requests, phone calls and bookings. Out of the box, it mostly counts page views.
This GA4 setup for small business guide explains how to create a property, install tracking, set up key events for enquiries, and focus on the handful of reports that are genuinely useful. It's written for business owners and office managers, not data analysts.
GA4 in a Nutshell
GA4 is Google's current analytics platform. It replaced Universal Analytics, which stopped processing data in 2023. GA4 is built around events. Every interaction, whether a page view, a click, a scroll or a form submission, is recorded as an event. The events that matter most to your business can be marked as key events (Google previously called these "conversions").
That model is flexible, but it means you need to tell GA4 which events represent a lead.
Step 1: Create Your Account and Property
- Go to Google Analytics and sign in with a Google account your business controls.
- Create an account for your business.
- Create a property for your website. Set the reporting time zone to your local Australian time zone and the currency to Australian dollars.
- Add a web data stream for your website's address.
Keep your business as the owner of the account. Add your web developer or marketing agency as users with appropriate permissions. Our guide on who owns your website explains why this matters when providers change.
Step 2: Install the Tracking Code
GA4 gives you a measurement ID that starts with "G-". There are a few ways to install it:
- Through your website platform: many platforms and CMSs have a field where you paste the measurement ID.
- Google Tag Manager: a free tool that manages tracking tags without editing code each time. It's useful if you plan to track several things or add advertising tags.
- Directly in the site code: your developer adds the Google tag to every page.
Install it once only. Installing it twice, for example through a plugin and Tag Manager, causes double counting.
Step 3: Check Enhanced Measurement
In your web data stream settings, enhanced measurement automatically tracks some common interactions, such as page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, video engagement and file downloads. Leave the useful ones on. Its form interaction tracking can be unreliable on some form setups, so we recommend tracking enquiries explicitly (see the next step).
Step 4: Track What Actually Matters
For most service businesses, these are the actions to track as key events.
Form submissions
The most reliable method is to send visitors to a thank-you page after a successful form submission, then mark a visit to that page as a key event. Alternatively, your developer can send a custom event (for example "generate_lead") when the form is successfully submitted.
Phone calls from the website
Track clicks on tap-to-call links (links starting with "tel:"). This counts people who tapped to call, not completed calls, but it's a useful signal, especially on mobile. Call tracking services can go further if phone leads are a big part of your business.
Email clicks
Track clicks on "mailto:" links if you publish an email address.
Bookings and purchases
If you take bookings or sell online, track completed bookings and purchases. Booking tools and e-commerce platforms often have built-in GA4 integrations.
Once these events are firing, mark them as key events in the Admin area.
Step 5: Adjust a Few Important Settings
- Data retention: by default, GA4 keeps detailed event data for a limited period. In Admin → Data settings → Data retention, you can extend it to the longest option available for standard properties.
- Internal traffic: define your office IP address as internal traffic and filter it out, so your own visits don't inflate the numbers.
- Unwanted referrals: if payment gateways or booking tools send visitors back to your site, list them so the visit isn't counted as a new referral.
- Link Search Console: in Admin → Product links, connect Google Search Console to see search queries alongside behaviour data. If you haven't set it up yet, follow our Google Search Console setup guide.
Step 6: Test Before You Trust It
Use DebugView or the Realtime report while you test:
- Visit your site, submit a test enquiry and tap a phone link.
- Check that each event appears.
- Confirm the key events are counted.
Then delete or note the test enquiry so your figures stay accurate.
The Reports Worth Checking
Traffic acquisition
Shows where visitors come from: organic search, direct, referrals, social, paid ads and email. Add your key events to the view to see which channels produce enquiries, not just visits.
Pages and screens
Shows the most-visited pages. Check whether your service pages get the attention you'd expect.
Landing pages
Shows the first page people see. If a page attracts lots of visitors but few enquiries, the content or call to action may need work. Tools like heatmaps can help diagnose why. See our comparison of heatmaps vs analytics.
Key events
Shows your enquiries, calls and bookings over time. This is the number that matters most.
A Monthly Analytics Routine
- Check total key events (enquiries) compared with the previous month and the same month last year.
- Look at which channels drove them.
- Review the top landing pages for organic search.
- Note any big drops or spikes, and check whether something changed on the site.
You don't need to check analytics every day. A consistent monthly review is far more useful.
Privacy and Consent in Australia
Australia doesn't have a general cookie consent law like the EU. However, your privacy policy should explain that you use analytics and what information it collects. If you have customers in the EU or UK, or you're covered by the Privacy Act, get advice on your obligations. Our guide to website legal requirements in Australia covers the basics.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is GA4 free?
Yes. The standard version of Google Analytics 4 is free.
What's the difference between GA4 and Search Console?
Search Console shows how your site performs in Google Search before someone clicks. GA4 shows what visitors do on your site after they arrive, from any source.
Why don't my GA4 numbers match my enquiry inbox?
Some visitors block analytics, some leads come by phone without tapping a link, and spam submissions may be counted. Treat GA4 as a trend indicator, and compare it with your real enquiry records.
Do I need Google Tag Manager?
Not necessarily. For a simple site, installing the Google tag directly is fine. Tag Manager is helpful when you want to track several custom events or manage multiple tags.
